February 8, 2012

Marshalltown Fire Chief Steve Edwards has said while the building at 135 E. Main St. is bowing, he's hopeful it won't collapse.

Edwards said firefighters are still on scene putting out hot spots at a downtown fire in Marshalltown.

The building, which housed La Nortenita Hispanic Grocery store appears to be destroyed. A family that lived in the back of the three-story building escaped without injury and are being assisted by the local Red Cross.

The fire broke out shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night. It was originally called in as a dumpster fire, however the fire initiated in the lower floor of the building, according to Fire Chief Steve Edwards.

Main Street is closed at this time from First to Third Avenue. Second Avenue is closed from Church to State Streets.
