DeCarlo Demolition Co. uses a track excavator to demolish the husk of 135 E. Main St. Friday morning. The building caught fire Tuesday night and firefighters spent 34 hours extinguishing the blaze. The state requires that companies razing buildings that were constructed when asbestos was commonly used be certified in asbestos abatement.
According to Marshalltown Fire Chief Steve Edwards East Main Street has been temporarily reopened, but Main Street will occasionally have to be closed for a few hours each day next week. The businesses on the south side east of the alley will remain closed for at least another week pending repairs to the east wall of their building.
