CONRAD - A leading technology company recognized a local school with a national award in recognition of its use of innovation.
Apple awarded BCLUW High School with its Distinguished School Award Monday during an assembly of staff and students. It is one of 56 schools in the nation to receive the honor this year.
BCLUW High School implemented its 1-to-1 laptop program three years ago, sparking a new way to learn.
"It's a huge accomplishment," BCLUW Principal Cari Teske said of the Apple award. "It says a lot about our school district."
BCLUW was the fifth school district in the state to go with the laptop initiative and now more than 100 Iowa districts utilize this type of program which all students have a computer to use for their work.
Tony Gunter, development executive at Apple, presented BCLUW with the award at the assembly. Gunter said the award is presented to schools who are transforming learning for the 21st Century.
"It's about looking at innovative ways to bring that technology to the classroom to make you guys better learners," Gunter told the students.
BCLUW Superintendent Ben Petty gave credit to the staff at the school for implementing the laptops and other technology in the classroom.
"The staff has been so dedicated and have worked so hard at this," Petty said.
