The victim and McDermott were allegedly at a mutual friend's home in Marshalltown at the time of the alleged incident, said Capt. Chris Jones of the Marshalltown Police Department. The two traveled there together.

According to the police report and court documents, McDermott willfully engaged in acts with the minor that involved sexual touching.

Jones said a friend informed the boy's parents of the activity, and that the victim eventually corroborated the allegations.

The parents then took the boy to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center where medical professionals examined him before calling the police, Jones said.

During her initial appearance, the judge appointed a public defender before releasing McDermott into Department of Correctional Services's custody.
