A domestic dispute ended in a local man walking to the emergency room with a knife wound in each leg early Monday morning.
Police arrived at MMSC's ER around 3:30 a.m. in response to a call that a man had suffered a puncture wound to his left thigh and a slash wound to his right shin with a kitchen knife, said Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department.
The man, Edwin Lugo, 38, allegedly gave police a false account of what happened when questioned by police. An investigation revealed that the man's girlfriend, Joleen Wanatee, 34, attacked Lugo with a knife following a domestic dispute in the couple's home on the 400 block of South Third Avenue, Hanken said.
Wanatee's three children, ages six, 10 and 13, were asleep in the home when the argument erupted into violence.
Lugo suffered only minor injuries and walked from his home to the ER to get medical attention. Doctors treated him and released him to police custody.
Lugo is charged with violation of a no contact order, a simply misdemeanor, and providing false reports, a serious misdemeanor. Wanatee is charged with three counts of child endangerment without injury and aggravated assault, all aggravated misdemeanors.
Hanken said police contacted the Department of Human Services to investigate the incident.
