Local man faces burglary charges

A man accused of rifling through a neighbor's glovebox Saturday night is being charged with third-degree burglary.

Timothy Jarrell, 33, allegedly unlawfully entered his neighbor's car just after 8:30 p.m. with a flashlight in hand, said Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department.

Because of flashlight, Jarrell, who lives only a few door down from the site of the alleged incident on the 400 block of East Boone Street, is also charged with possession of burglar's tools, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Hanken said it was unclear whether Jarrell had to force entry into the car.

The owner caught Jarrell inside the car and confronted him with a friend before calling police, Hanken said.

A while back, Hanken said, Iowa law changed to allow officers to charge suspects with burglary when unlawfully entering vehicles.

The officer has the option to charge burglary or theft. That decision can be influenced by the value of the property in question or whether a number of vehicles had been broken into, he said.

Third-degree burglary is a Class D felony.
