Marshalltown man arrested on drug charges

A man caught allegedly driving down the wrong side of the street is charged with five misdemeanors after police stopped him Tuesday.

A traffic officer spotted Scott Groff, 47, of Marshalltown, heading west on Riverside Drive just before 6 p.m. The officer then pulled over Groff on the 500 block of North Third Street, said Capt. Mike Hanken of the Marshalltown Police Department.

Searching Groff's car, the officer discovered a prescription bottle with the label torn off. Inside the bottle were multiple nortriptyline - an anti-depressant. The officer also allegedly found several resealable plastic bags with drug residue in them and a syringe in Groff's possession, according to police reports released Friday.

Police have sent the bags to be tested to determine what kind of drugs were in them, Hanken said.

Police charged Groff with four simple misdemeanors for no registration - the plates on the car he was driving we not registered to that car - driving under suspension, lack of insurance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Groff also faces an unlawful possession of a prescription drug charge, a serious misdemeanor.

Hanken said nothing in the investigation indicated that Groff was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
