Marshalltown Police Department is here to help

June 1, 2012
Pat Helfer and Kaye Burke Marshalltown , Times-Republican

You want to know what the Marshalltown Police Department does? Take the Marshalltown Citizen Police Academy (MCPA) classes and you will find out. An excellent series of articles written by David Alexander has been presented in the T-R, so you have some idea about the classes. But we wanted to tell you from our point of view.

After taking these classes, this is what we found out:

Policemen need to be knowledgeable in all these areas - technology, dogs, sobriety testing, drug trends, crime scene processing, shooting & weapon training, vehicle stops, driving, and physical control of an offender.

Not only that, but they need to be savvy in psychology, fitness, organization and communication.

Not only that but they are doing the best they can with the facility they have. It was presented as clean and organized, but far from ideal.

Not only that, but the Department is dedicated and genuinely concerned in helping the people in Marshalltown to be as safe and secure as possible.

Not only that, but they are kind and considerate - but know exactly what to look for in adverse situations.

You know the old saying, "Don't criticize and abuse until you walk a mile in my shoes." Through the MCPA, you can find out just exactly what shoes they do walk in. Sign up for the next series of classes. You will not regret it. We felt the class was informative, we had a good time, we learned a lot, plus we discovered what a great police department our community has.. And then if MCPA works for you, volunteer in some capacity because the MPD would love your help.

We commend the police department at all levels and thank you for a wonderful eye-opening experience.
