A Marshalltown couple received a scary wake-up call late Sunday night after an SUV crashed through their garage.

Capt. Mike Hanken with the Marshalltown Police Department said that Consuelo Avalos-Gonzalez, of Marshalltown, was traveling northbound on South Third Avenue when she missed a curve in the road, clipped a tree with her Ford Explorer and then came to rest in the garage of Bob and Barb Ryner at 1807 S. Third Ave. around 11 p.m.

"We had just gone to bed about 15 to 20 minutes before it happened," said homeowner Bob Ryner. "We didn't hear much noise. It almost sounded like something just jumped on to the metal roof."

A Ford Explorer crashed into the side of this garage at the home of Bob and Barb Ryner, 1807 S. Third Ave. around 11 p.m. Sunday night. According to the Marshalltown Police Department, the vehicle was traveling southbound on South Third Avenue when it missed a curve and came to rest in the garage.

Ryner said that the garage received extensive damage, and a home inspector stopped by Monday morning to survey the damage and deemed that the home was structurally fine.

"We will have to probably replace the south side of the garage, and our van was totaled," Ryner said.

Hanken said there were no injuries sustained in the accident and everyone walked away.

"An ambulance was called to the scene, but everyone turned out to be OK," Hanken said.

"The important thing is that things can be fixed, people can't. We're just happy no one was hurt," Ryner said.

Hanken said the police report wasn't finalized Monday and that charges for the driver are pending.
