The man had to be transported to an Iowa City hospital for surgery.

The incident was part of a brawl that began on Second Street and moved to the 600 block of North Center Street. As many as 10 people were involved in the fights, but none wanted to pursue charges, Hanken said.

Police arrested Brooks around 9 p.m. Tuesday and charged him with felony assault, a Class D felony.

Brooks has had numerous arrests both as a juvenile and adult for similar crimes, according to court documents.

Alleged car thief makes initial appearance

A Marshalltown man charged with breaking into a garage and stealing a woman's car in May made his initial court appearance Thursday.

Refugio Arangure, 47, allegedly broke into the garage of a 79-year-old woman sometime between April 30 and May 4 and made off with her van, Capt. Mike Hanken, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said.

Hanken said Grinnell police contacted the MPD when they pulled over Arangure for a traffic violation and suspected, because it was registered to another person, the van he was driving did not belong to him.

Arangure had an outstanding warrant in Webster County and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold on him, Hanken said.

Police charged Arangure with second-degree theft and third-degree burglary. Initial reports of the incident listed Arangure as being charged with operating a vehicle without the owner's consent.

Local man charged with willful injury

A 43-year-old man is accused of beating a 15-year-old boy with a hammer.

James Hodson, of Marshalltown, is charged with willful injury, a Class D felony, after an incident Tuesday where he allegedly assaulted a boy visiting a friend, Capt. Mike Hanken, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said.

Hodson became confrontational toward the boy, who was coming over to visit a friend next door to Hodson on the 500 block of North First Avenue, ordering the boy to get away from his house, Hanken said.

The boy declined medical treatment after Hodson allegedly attacked him with the hammer at about 4 a.m., striking him several times in the stomach and upper-shoulder, Hanken said. Several witnesses corroborated the story.

Hodson has been convicted of numerous assault charges and other violent crimes.
