Aquatic center should offer free admission

July 10, 2012
Stephen Allen, Marshalltown , Times-Republican

Since we are experiencing the hottest summer in nearly 30 years, and considering we have now had four children's bodies pulled from the Iowa River in the past two weeks, I think it is time that this city opens the Aquatic Center at free admission to all children age 12 and younger until the high temps are under 90 degrees.

We shouldn't ask if it is affordable, we should ask ourselves if we can afford not to do this. Our children deserve to have a safe and fun place to escape the heat.

Record attendance should keep the pool profitable through concession sales alone.

We need to make it clear that the city of Marshalltown puts our children's lives before profits, not profits before safety, and maybe we can stop dragging dead kids out of the Iowa River.

This city has the means to offer something better in a time of real need, and we need to do what is right for the protection of our kids.
