Woman faces three counts of child endangerment

A 31-year-old Marshalltown woman is charged with three counts of child endangerment after allegedly being intoxicated while in public.

Capt. Mike Hanken, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said Deja Hasselmann had her 11-year-old daughter, 1-year-old daughter and 7-month-old son with her at Casey's on South 12th Avenue just after midnight Sunday when police arrived to discover her intoxicated.

Reports did not indicate Hasselmann's blood alcohol content at the time of her arrest.

Hanken said Crisis Care took the children into custody until the Department of Human Services could place them with family.

The three counts of child endangerment are without injury, aggravated misdemeanors, while the public intoxication charge is a simple misdemeanor.

Police serve warrant on felony domestic charge

Police picked up a man wanted for felony domestic assault Friday night.

Luke Sears, 26, of Marshalltown, allegedly assaulted his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend at the couple's home on North Third Street July 6, Capt. Mike Hanken, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said.

Hanken said an officer noticed the victim's black eye July 9 when questioning her about another incident. She told police she and Sears had gotten into an argument over housekeeping that ended with him throwing her to the floor, punching her in the eye and choking her.

Because of the new stipulations in the Iowa code regarding attempted strangulations, Sears faces a Class D felony, but Hanken said his charge would have been enhanced anyway due to prior domestic assault convictions.

Police picked Sears up on a warrant resulting from the incident. He is being held without bond.
