Woman charged with child neglect has trial delayed

The grandmother accused of failing to provide care to an 18-month-old girl in August 2011, resulting in the toddler's death, has seen her trial delayed.

Ruth Sharer, 40, is charged with two counts of child endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors, for allegedly leaving her granddaughter and the girl's 3-year-old brother unattended at her home at 908 Summit St.

Sharer is the mother of Kristin Hernandez, who pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent and child endangerment in June.

Sharer's trial was scheduled for Thursday, but has been delayed to 9 a.m. Aug. 9, three days after the court is scheduled to sentence her daughter.

Garwin man charged with felony domestic assault

A Garwin man turned himself in on a warrant for felony domestic assault Wednesday.

Anthony Ratliff, 32, allegedly choked his ex-girlfriend early Tuesday morning after the estranged couple had a dispute at the woman's home on the 400 block of South First Avenue, Capt. Mike Hanken, of the Marshalltown Police Department, said.

The woman did not need medical attention.

Under new stipulations in the Iowa code, attempted strangulation is now charged as Class D felony.

Ratliff is being held on $5,000 bond.

Jeffrey James Weldon, 407 Melody Lane Apt. #2, made an initial appearance on a public intoxication charge and a interference with official acts charge. He pleaded guilty to both charges. On the public intoxication charge the fine was $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.50, due immediately. The fine on the interference charge was $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately.

Matthew Clinton, of Toledo, made an initial appearance on a failure to display current annual inspection sticker charge and a speeding in a work zone area charge. He pleaded guilty to the speeding charge and the fine was $150 with a $52.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $262.50, due immediately. The failure to display current inspection sticker charge was dismissed with court costs of $60, due immediately.

Kaylynn Taylor Anderson, 407 W. Main St. Apt. #204, made an initial appearance on a theft, fifth degree charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75 plus restitution, due immediately.

Larry Rogers, 513 S. 4th St., made an initial appearance on a speeding charge and a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge. He pleaded guilty to the driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately. Leopoldo Reyes, 307 N. 14th Ave., made an initial appearance on a driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge, an operating while license is suspended charge and a driving under suspension charge. The assistant county attorney asked that the driving while license is denied, cancelled, revoked or suspended charge and the operating vehicle while license is suspended charge be dismissed, and the judge assigned court costs of $60 per charge for a total of $120, due immediately. Reyes pleaded guilty to the driving under suspension charge and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due immediately.

On Tuesday, Mick Dubois, 307 Innes Blvd., reported the theft of a Nikon D-40X camera in a case with a 35mm lens, a 55-200mm lens and filters along with a ratchet style screwdriver with interchangeable bits from a storage unit located at 1101 E. Nevada St. Estimated value of loss was $2,010.

Arrests

On Tuesday, Kelci Jayne Beatty, 403 S. 3rd St., was arrested for operating while intoxicated, first offense.
