Wollam wins Legion men’s club title

Ben Wollam, a 2012 Marshalltown High School graduate, shot a two-day total of 8-under-par 132 to win the men's club tournament championship on Saturday and Sunday at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course.

Wollam shot 67-65 to break away from a first-day tie with Jeff Arment, who came in second in the championship flight after shooting 67-72-139. Rick Deines carded 73-70-143 for third place, edging Scott Riemenschneider (72-72-144). Rounding out the top flight were Brandon Dutton (147) in fifth, Todd Bolar and Jim Carlson (148) tied for sixth, and Jim Herink and Darin Shipley (150) tied for eighth.

The ladies' club championship went to Jackie Zimmerman, who shot 82-80-162 to finish with a five-shot advantage ahead of Lori Veld (167). Paula Wantiez placed third with a 169, followed by Leslie Walden and Barb Vovos (175) tied for fourth. Linda Anderson (178), Sally Sharp (179) and Meg Sponseller (181) rounded out the women's championship flight. Sharp won the women's handicap title after her net score of 131, with Wantiez second (135).

The tournament also featured a hole-in-one by Terry Van Cleave, who aced the 145-yard seventh hole with his 6-iron as witnessed by Jack Smith and Phil Rush.
