In this season of ever-increasing negative political attack ads, I felt compelled to share our families' recent interaction with an Iowa congressman.
Several weeks ago we had come up against a brick wall in trying to send a laptop computer to my son-in-law who is currently deployed to Kuwait. The reasons we wanted to get a computer to him were two-fold. He had the opportunity to take some online college classes while he is stationed there and we wanted to have the opportunity to video chat with him when his daughter is born in late October. The reason we couldn't get one to him was that government regulations do not currently allow the USPS to ship anything with a lithium battery overseas. Everything we read said that only USPS can ship to APO addresses.
As a last resort, I sent an email to five of our elected representatives (both state and national, Republican and Democrat) asking for any help or guidance they could give us in getting a laptop to him. The very next morning I had a call on my answering machine from a person in Congressman Tom Latham's Iowa office. She had received my email and had already contacted the Iowa National Guard and learned that DHL can deliver laptops to army bases overseas. I quickly called her back and after speaking to someone from the Hazardous Shipping Department of DHL, we had our method of getting the laptop to Kuwait. He has since received it, started some online classes and even video chatted with our daughter and the rest of our family.
Only one other office has even responded to my request for assistance by mailing me a long form to fill out and send back in before they could give my any help. Like the masthead on Congressman Latham's website says, he really does "work for the people of Iowa's 4th congressional district" and our family appreciated it very much.
