SPORTS SHORTS: Eley garners academic honor at AIB

DES MOINES - AIB College of Business freshman guard Brandon Eley has received Midwest Collegiate Conference academic all-conference honors, it was announced Wednesday.

Eley, a Colo-NESCO graduate and Zearing native, was nominated by the AIB coaching staff after having at least a 3.2 grade point average. Eley was an honorable mention all-Midwest Collegiate Conference selection after leading head coach Tony Giannetto's Eagles in scoring (17.5 points per game), assists (3.5), steals (2.3), blocks (.7) and minutes played (32.8) last winter.

Eley was a two-time Iowa Newspaper Association all-state boys' basketball first team selection at Colo-NESCO.

Wandering Creek crowns club champ

Then Baccam won a playoff against Andy Fowler to claim the men's club championship on Saturday at Wandering Creek Golf Course.

Baccam and Fowler both shot rounds of 74 to force a playoff.

Dave Baccam (82) finished in third place, followed by Tim Bell (83).

Owen Kerber's net score of 73 claimed him the handicap championship.

Hole-in-one at Collison Par 3

Ken Stubbs of Marshalltown recently scored a hole-in-one at Collison Par 3, using his 6-iron to ace the 18th hole. His shot on Monday was witnessed by Larry Lemker.

Elmwood Ladies play four-gal event

The team of Peg Kelly, Liz Adam, Heidi Drager and Judy Williams posted a net score of 26 to win the Elmwood Ladies Golf Association's four-gal best shot event on Tuesday at Elmwood Country Club.

The foursome of Share Miriovsky, Jacki Bolar, Estelle Perkins and Wanda Evans won a playoff after tying with Joan Gerbo, Lana Benz, Teresa Paul and Susy Wideman for second place after matching rounds of 28.

Chalk talk, scrimmage for ISU netters

AMES - The 10th-ranked Iowa State volleyball team will host its annual Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday following a Chalk Talk session with head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch.

Both events are free and open to the public, with the Chalk Talk beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the scrimmage set to begin at 1 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

Hawkeye volleyball plans scrimmage

IOWA CITY - The University of Iowa volleyball team will host its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage at 7 p.m. Saturday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Admission to the event is free, and fans are asked to enter through the north or west entrances. Posters and schedule cards will be available for fans at the gates.

UNI volleyball plans golf fundraiser

CEDAR FALLS - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball golf outing is set for Oct. 7 at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike. The four-person best shot will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

Cost is $45 per person and includes green fees, flight prizes and flag events. Cart rental and dinner tickets come at additional cost, and all proceeds benefit the UNI volleyball program.
