Competition helps MHS swim to a strong start

DES MOINES - Last year's times got left in the wake as the Marshalltown girls' swimming team scored a season-opening 100-70 victory over Des Moines Hoover on Thursday night.

Bobcat head coach Angie Nelson noted that a number of her swimmers charted new personal-best times, something not that common for the first meet of the year.

It helped that Hoover and MHS were often side-by-side at the finish line.

"The first meet is always so scattered that you're not sure what the newer kids can do, but every race was a good race," said Nelson. "Hoover had three or four girls who were really good, so that worked out great for us."

Bobcat juniors Leah Barkema and Chloe Kuehner both finished with four event victories on the night. Barkema won individual gold in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke, while Kuehner was tops in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Both were members of Marshalltown's winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, as was Therese Kuhlman.

Kuhlman got her own gold in the 100 breaststroke and the junior trio made up seven of Marshalltown's eight event wins. Darc Vopava, a sophomore, scored the other victory for MHS, winning the race to the wall in the 50 freestyle.

"That was her fastest 50, and Tasia King swimming junior varsity was 12 seconds faster in the 200 freestyle than her best last year and 30 seconds faster in the 500 free," said Nelson. "We had a number of bests that beat last year's best. We had some good benchmarks."

Freshman Ashley Hala teamed with Barkema, Kuehner and Kuhlman to win the 200 medley relay, while it was sophomore Maggie Carnahan joining the same junior trio in the 400 free relay.

"It's a great start," added Nelson. "We've got to figure out how everybody's going to fit into our lineup, but that may vary from meet to meet."

Marshalltown hosts perennial power West Des Moines Valley in its home opener Tuesday night, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the MHS pool.
