CONRAD - AGWSR's defense-first philosophy is showing immediate dividends this season.
The Cougars improved to 2-0 with a 13-6 victory over BCLUW on Friday night, doubling last year's season win total behind a stingy defense.
AGWSR ran its scoreless streak to better than five periods of play before BCLUW (0-1) fought back to within one touchdown with its only score of the game. Taylor Case punched it in from 1 yard out in the fourth quarter to get the Comets on the board in their season and home opener.

AGWSR defensive lineman Joey Neely brings down BCLUW running back Taylor Case for a loss in the first half of Friday’s non-district Week 1 football game in Conrad. AGWSR improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 13-6 victory.
Austin Heitland gave AGWSR the lead for good with his 40-yard touchdown catch and run during the third quarter, with his extra-point kick making it 7-0. Nick Pieters later plunged in from 4 yards out to put the Cougars ahead 13-0 in the fourth period.
Heitland's TD catch was AGWSR's only passing yards of the night as quarterback Brandon Johnson finished 1-for-2 through the air. Pieters piled up 92 yards rushing on 27 carries, and Austin Williams added 42 yards on eight tries.
BCLUW used the passing attack to threaten the Cougars' defense throughout the game, but couldn't finish off its drives. Conner Ubben went 12-for-17 with 145 yards, with Lane Caster leading the receivers with three catches for 61 yards. Isaac Novak hauled in six passes for 31 yards and Taylor Sams had three grabs for 27 yards.
Case racked up 45 rushing yards on 17 carries with BCLUW's lone score.
The Comets are at home again in Week 2, hosting Montezuma in non-district play. AGWSR entertains GMG (1-1).
