Toledo couple charged with assault
A Toledo couple faces assault charges for allegedly attacking the employees of a local bar.
Shannon Verdulla, 27, and Eric Verdulla, 29, allegedly came into Rumors Sports Bar and Grill, 309 S. 12th Ave. Place, just before 2 a.m. Sunday, said Capt. Brian Batterson, with the Marshalltown Police Department.
Because of a previous incident, Batterson said, the bartender, a 20-year-old woman, asked another employee, a 21-year-old woman, to serve to duo.
After a while, the couple began accosting the employee who asked her coworker to serve the two. The 20-year-old victim then told Eric and Shannon they needed to finish their drinks and leave since the bar was closing, Batterson said.
Then, Eric attempted to leave with an alcoholic beverage. The 21-year-old bartender managed to take the drink from him before his wife attempted to strangle the other woman. When the 21-year-old woman tried to intervene, Batterson said, Eric punched her in the face.
Shannon faces an aggravated assault charge for the attempted strangulation. Police charged Eric with serious assault when the couple came into the police station later that day, Batterson said.
The 20-year-old woman sought medical attention on her own, but did not need to be hospitalized, Batterson said.
