MARSHALL, Minn. - The No. 2-ranked Minnesota-Duluth football team opened the season with a 45-20 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday.
The visiting Bulldogs got out to an 18-13 halftime lead and outscored SMSU 27-7 the rest of the way.
Marshalltown native Tyler Peschong had a hand in both Southwest Minnesota State touchdowns in the first half. Peschong, a 2008 Marshalltown High School graduate, tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Mustangs (0-1) a 7-0 lead on the game's opening possession.
In the second period, Peschong pulled SMSU within 15-13 after a 6-yard TD run, but the Mustangs managed only one more score the rest of the way.
Peschong finished 28-for-47 for 304 yards with the early touchdown and no interceptions.
SMSU resumes play on the road next Saturday, going to Aberdeen, S.D., for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game at Northern State.
