PREP VOLLEYBALL: Spartans cruise to 5-0

GRUNDY CENTER - Top-ranked Grundy Center kept rolling along, collecting its 21st straight NICL West Division victory with a 3-0 sweep of visiting West Marshall on Thursday night.

The Spartans (5-0, 2-0) won by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-13, and haven't lost a set in league play in 55 straight.

For West Marshall (5-3, 1-1), Alarie Craven was 13-for-13 serving with one ace to go along with 18 assists. Kaitlyn Nichols led the team with nine kills and six digs, while Kelsiann Halbloom had six kills and a .545 hitting percentage.

McKenna Hotopp, Sydney Beals and Whitney Benson each had five digs, and Beals led the way with two blocks.

Both teams are back in action with tournaments on Saturday, as Grundy Center goes to Aplington-Parkersburg and West Marshall visits East Marshall.

AGWSR 3, South Tama 1

TAMA - AGWSR won back-to-back NICL West matches to end its 0-4 start to the season, downing South Tama (6-3, 1-1) on its home court in four games Thursday, 25-14, 26-28, 25-23, 25-19.

The Cougars (2-4, 2-0) were led by Shelbi Nederhoff's seven kills, Jayne Wiarda had five and Molly Boheman four. Wiarda had 12 assists.

Olivia Ingledue racked up 17 digs to lead the defense, and Alexa Johnson's five blocks were a team-high.

Wiarda served 26-for-26 with six aces and Danielle Henning was 25-for-26 with four aces.

South Hardin 3, East Marshall 2

LE GRAND - South Hardin (1-5, 1-1) scored a five-set win over East Marshall, 25-27, 25-8, 25-17, 21-25, 15-11, in NICL West action.

East Marshall (0-5, 0-2) was led by Claire Johnson with 17 kills and nine blocks, while Katie Roseland had six kills, four blocks, nine digs, and was 11-for-12 serving with five aces.

Ashley Allen had 19 assists and was 9-of-10 serving, while Sam Earley was 6-for-7 serving and had eight digs. Madisen Hinegardner led the Mustangs with 20 digs, while Haley Long totaled 12 assists and eight digs.

East Marshall hosts an eight-team tournament on Saturday. The Mustangs face Bondurant-Farrar, Des Moines Christian and Tri-County in pool play, while the other half consists of West Marshall, Iowa Valley, Roland-Story and La Porte City Union.

BCLUW 3, Gladbrook-Reinbeck 0

REINBECK - BCLUW ended its seven-match losing skid with a three-game sweep of Gladbrook-Reinbeck in NICL West play, 25-22, 25-12, 27-25.

Olivia Callaway led the Comets (2-7, 1-1) with 11 kills while Reeba Box and Kendall Scurr both had nine. Nicolette Simpson charted 27 assists and was 22-of-23 serving with three aces.

Raelynn Aicher had a team-high 13 digs, Box had nine, while Scurr and Simpson both added nine. Box and Callaway both totaled four blocks, while Nicole Montgomery was 16-for-16 serving with an ace.

Shelton Hatch led the Rebels (0-3, 0-1) with 15 kills. Jenny Schildroth tallied 24 assists while Erin Wentzien had 32 digs and was 12-for-13 serving with two aces.

Brooke Boyle led G-R with three blocks, while Britney Keller and Alyssa Christopher both made 13 digs.

The Rebels go to the South Hardin Classic on Saturday, while BCLUW hosts West Marshall on Tuesday.

North Tama 3, Northeast Hamilton 0

TRAER - Shannon Stuart racked up a team-high 12 kills and was 16-for-17 serving with eight aces as the North Tama volleyball squad stayed unbeaten in Iowa Star Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Northeast Hamilton.

Allison Zobel was 24-for-24 serving and had 11 kills and six digs, while Emma Knoop chipped in seven kills and Josie Youel five for the Redhawks (7-6, 2-0). Aryn Isenhower totaled 23 assists to go with six digs and three aces on 12-of-13 serving.

Northeast Hamilton dipped to 1-7 overall after falling in their conference opener.

North Tama returns to action Tuesday at Class 1A No. 4 Tripoli.
