West Marshall 2nd at Mustangs’ tourney

LE GRAND - The West Marshall volleyball squad went 2-3 at a weekend tournament at East Marshall on Saturday. The Trojans lost to Iowa Valley and LaPorte City Union and bested Roland-Story in pool play and then took down Bondurant-Farrar before losing to LaPorte City Union in the championship match.

The Trojans took second place on the day. Iowa Valley beat West Marshall 21-15, 10-21, 24-22 before Union disposed of West Marshall in three games.

No. 10 LaPorte City Union won 21-19, 9-21, 15-10. West Marshall ended pool play with a 21-17, 21-19 win over Roland-Story. The Trojans then bested the Lady Jays of Bondurant-Farrar in three games, winning 16-25, 25-22, 15-12. LaPorte City Union beat West Marshall in the championship match 25-13, 22-25, 16-14.

West Marshall finished second in pool play based on points and then took second overall after falling to LaPorte City Union in the final.

Sydney Beals led the Trojans (7-6) with 25 kills and seven digs, while McKenna Hotopp added 23 kills and four aces. Whitney Benson contributed 23 kills and a team-high 23 digs, while Kaitlyn Nichols added 22 kills on the day. Alarie Craven had a team-high 92 assists and six aces.

East Marshall played three matches in its host tournament Saturday and went 1-2, earning its first win of the season against Tri-County.

The Mustangs lost to Bondurant-Farrar and Des Moines Christian in two games and then knocked off Tri-County 21-11, 21-7.

Leading the way for the Mustangs was Claire Johnson's 13 kills, seven blocks and nine digs, while Katie Roseland added six kills, three blocks and nine digs. Ashley Allen finished with 16 assists and four kills and Callie Roseland contributed four kills, while Madisen Hinegardner and Haley Long finished with 15 digs and 14 assists, respectively. Long also was 14-of-14 in serves with two aces.

Sam Earley was 27-for-27 in serves with nine aces, and Gabee Benson also had an ace.

West Marshall will next play at BCLUW on Tuesday, while East Marshall (1-7) heads to Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
