PARKERSBURG - The Grundy Center volleyball team found its first loss at the Aplington-Parkersburg tournament for the second year in a row, as the Spartans succumbed to Class 4A No. 11 West Delaware in three sets Saturday.
The Class 1A No. 1-ranked Spartans won their other four matches of the day, each by 2-0 sweeps, to improve to 9-1 for the year.
Grundy Center topped 2A No. 7 Denver (21-18, 21-14), 1A No. 4 Tripoli (21-17, 21-18), Aplington-Parkersburg (21-16, 21-17) and Nashua-Plainfield (21-9, 21-9), but fell to West Delaware (21-19, 19-21, 15-8).
Sam Meyers led the Spartans with 55 kills on the day. She added 31 digs and seven blocks. Stephanie Foust contributed 25 kills and was a team-best 41-for-45 serving with six aces.
Heather Hook racked up 98 assists, while Noel Saak and Kennedy Buss both had 10 kills. Buss led the squad with eight blocks.
Riley Sents charted 73 digs while Peyton Ralston had 22 digs and was 34-for-39 serving with two aces.
Another NICL West team was in action at A-P. AGWSR suffered a 1-4 day, collecting its lone win against Nashua-Plainfield (21-16, 21-12). The Cougars fell to Aplington-Parkersburg (21-15, 21-13), Denver (22-24, 21-9, 21-15), Tripoli (21-11, 21-9) and West Delaware (21-13, 21-8).
AGWSR (3-8) was paced by Ella Frazier's 21 kills, while Molly Boheman had 12 and both Kristen Zacharias and Alexa Johnson had 10 kills. Olivia Ingledue led the way with 36 digs.
Jayne Wiarda stuffed the stat sheet with 41 assists, 27 digs, six kills, a team-high five blocks and 33-for-34 serving with three aces.
South Hardin Classic
ELDORA - Gladbrook-Reinbeck collected its first three wins of the season during the South Hardin Classic on Saturday.
The Rebels (3-5) went 3-2 with wins over Colo-NESCO (21-18, 23-21), Meskwaki Settlement (25-11, 25-19) and Greene County (14-25, 25-22, 18-16). Losses came to Forest City (21-18, 21-18) and Oelwein (21-14, 21-11).
Shelton Hatch paced G-R with 24 kills and five blocks while going 23-for-24 serving. Britney Keller had 18 kills, 27 digs and 24-for-26 serving, while Hayley Weber totaled 20 kills and two blocks. Ellie Stoakes chipped in with 11 kills.
Jenny Schildroth accumulated 53 assists and was 26-for-27 serving with an ace. Erin Wentzien totaled 54 digs and served 32-for-33 with four aces, while Alyssa Christopher had 21 digs and was 34-for-35 serving.
Tournament host South Hardin (3-7) finished the day 2-2, defeating Greene County (22-20, 21-14) and Meskwaki (21-10, 21-12) but falling to Forest City (8-25, 25-17, 15-10) and Grandview Park Baptist (16-21, 21-16, 15-7).
Ellen Swartz scored 33 kills to pace the Tigers. Kayla Prosser had 50 assists, 13 kills and was 31-of-31 serving with four aces.
Alaina Lake led the way with 52 digs. Morgan Ridout was a team-best 36-for-38 with six aces, while Emily Haywood was 25-for-26 with seven aces. Swartz served 28-for-29 with eight aces, while Sarah Boomgarden led the team with six blocks.
