PREP VOLLEYBALL: West Marshall goes 3-2; Mustangs score 2nd win

NEVADA - The West Marshall volleyball team put together a back-and-forth day in finishing with a 3-2 record at the Nevada Tournament on Saturday.

The Trojans advanced out of pool play with a 2-1 record, lost to Newton and defeated Dallas Center-Grimes to close out the day.

West Marshall (12-8) opened tournament play by beating Ballard (21-13, 14-21, 15-9) before dropping a three-set match to Iowa Falls-Alden (15-21, 21-15, 15-11). The Trojans turned in around to rout Madrid (21-18, 21-9) to close out pool play.

Newton topped the Trojans 25-23, 25-9, but West Marshall swept the Filllies of DCG, 25-23, 25-17.

Sydney Beals led West Marshall with 26 kills and six blocks on the day. McKenna Hotopp and Whitney Benson both finished with 23 kills, 31 digs and four service aces, Kaitlyn Nichols had 21 kills and five aces, while Kelsiann Halblom contributed 17 kills and three blocks.

Alarie Craven collected 86 assists to go along with 27 digs and a team-best 53-for-53 serving.

The Trojans return to action on Tuesday with an NICL West Division match at home against AGWSR.

Mustangs 1-2 at STC Invite

TAMA - The East Marshall volleyball team picked up its second win of the season during Saturday's South Tama Invite, sweeping Saydel convincingly, 21-3, 21-15.

The Mustangs (2-11) fell in their other two matches during pool play, losing in straight sets to host South Tama (21-17, 21-12) and to Class 2A No. 13-ranked Sumner-Fredericksburg (21-10, 21-13).

Leading the way at the net for East Marshall was Claire Johnson, who tallied 11 kills to go along with three blocks. Katie Roseland contributed five kills, five blocks and 12 digs, while Ashley Allen had four kills as well as 16 assists.

Allen was at the service line for much of the first set of East Marshall's victory over Saydel. She finished the day 28-for-30 serving with 11 aces. Callie Roseland was 20-of-20 with six aces, Sam Earley went 13-for-14 with three aces, and newly crowned Homecoming queen Gabee Benson was 3-for-3 with an ace.

Madisen Hinegardner had a team-high 17 digs, and Haley Long chipped in 14 assists and nine digs. The Mustangs are back in action Tuesday with an NICL West contest back in Tama against the STC Trojans.
