Associate Court
Joseph Elbino, of Des Moines, made an initial appearance on an arrest warrant for a probation violation charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The probation revocation hearing was set for 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 12. No bond was allowed in this case.
Adam Leiva, 108 1/2 S. 3rd St., made an initial appearance on an assault causing bodily injury charge. The public defender's office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 15. Leiva was released on his own recognizance. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party.

Arrests
On Saturday, Steven Eugene Kunch, 112 N. 13th Ave., was arrested for possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating while intoxicated, first-offense.
Accidents
On Monday, a minivan driven by Robert Dean Thompson, 10 W. Olive St., was southbound on Highway 14 just north of Laurel when it entered the east ditch striking a seed sign and post before coming to rest in the creek. Thompson, a diabetic, was transported to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center with possible injuries. Damage to the Thompson minivan was estimated at $3,500.
On Sept. 18, a car driven by Scott Allen Welsh, of Tama, was westbound on Highway 30 when it struck a deer that entered the traveled portion of the roadway sustaining front end and right front quarter panel damage. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Welsh car was estimated at $4,000.
On Sept. 18, a pickup driven by Brian Patrick Gould, of Garwin, was westbound on Main Street Road when it struck a deer that entered the roadway causing minor front end damage. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Gould pickup was estimated at $2,000.
On Sept. 17, a car driven by Janice Elaine Nanke, of Cedar Falls, was northbound on Reed Avenue when it went out of control on the loose gravel and entered the west ditch striking a stop sign causing moderate front end and windshield damage. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Nanke car was estimated at $1,700.
