Sign stealing is despicable behavior

Contests, whether they be athletic, political or just a lively game of cards, can bring out the very best or the very worst in human behavior. Unfortunately, this year's political campaign is resulting in some of the worst. Over the past few weeks, unknown individuals have been going onto private property and stealing signs that are in support of Republican candidates as well as signs supporting "Life" in and around the Marshalltown area. All 300 signs that have been placed in support of Mitt Romney have been stolen as well as some for other Republican candidates that are running for office. There should be such an outcry from all of our citizens against this despicable behavior, that everyone, including those responsible, will hear.

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution codifies the freedom of speech as a constitutional right. Those who disagree with certain political views are free to do so, but please do not infringe on the rights of those having a different point of view to do the same. Stealing only speaks to the character and integrity of those responsible. Our prayer is that as citizens of this fine community, we would denounce such behavior. May we all be allowed to show our earnest and passionate support for our candidate's position with mutual respect and allow the political process to work.
