JEWELL - Triggered by a third-place finish from Nathan Bradley, the West Marshall boys' cross country team placed second out of nine teams with a score of 92 at the South Hamilton Invite Thursday.
East Marshall (110) wasn't far behind to claim third, while Class 2A No. 4 ranked Gilbert captured the title recording a score of 46.
Bradley crossed the finish in 17 minutes and 10 seconds, finishing nine seconds ahead of the Mustangs' top runner, Ben Terrones, in fourth.
Following Terrones, Caleb Benzing raced to a 13th-place finish for East Marshall, while Rob Petrie (19th), Drew Schossow (20th) and Nick Mommer (54th) also figured into the Mustangs' final tally.
Tanner Arnold and Cole White were stride for stride in 16th and 17th, while Austin McCool (21st) and Hunter Wilkening (35th) completed the Trojans' scoring quintet. Adam Sodders (36th) and Nate Bierly (42nd) also represented West Marshall.
A trio of top-15 finishers wasn't enough for the Class 2A No. 15-ranked East Marshall girls to crack the upper half of the standings as the Mustangs finished sixth out of eight squads with a score of 130.
Class 2A No. 3 Gilbert cruised to the team title with 57 points, while No. 11 South Hamilton (91) and No. 8 CMB (94) held off Nevada (96) to round out the top four. No. 10 Roland Story was fifth with a score of 108.
Kristen Amendt (9th), Haley Fye (13th) and Paige Miller (15th) set a quick pace for East Marshall but a sizable gap between their next two runners hampered their score. Allie Roberts and Paige Flugge also figured into the team's tally placing 46th and 47th respectively.
Victoria Pothast led the Trojans, who didn't field enough runners for a team score, with a fourth place finish. Maggie Sodders (48th), Carly Kielman (55th) and Ashley Pfantz (56th) also competed for West Marshall.
East Marshall heads to La Porte City Tuesday for the Union Invite, while before both the Mustangs and West Marshall will race at the Trojan Invite Thursday at Lincoln Valley Golf Course.
Both squads will compete in the North Iowa Cedar League conference meet next Saturday at Oak Leaf Country Club near Reinbeck.
