Waukee edges Kennedy for 4A boys’ state golf title

POLK CITY - Waukee passed Cedar Rapids Kennedy on the second day of play to claim the Class 4A boys' state golf tournament title on Saturday at Tournament Club of Iowa.

The Warriors rallied from a stroke back to edge the Cougars 617-618. Ottumwa, led by individual medalist Matthew Walker's 1-under-par 69-72-141, finished in third with 629.

Walker shot the low round on both Friday and Saturday, sharing the opening day's low score honor with Johnston senior Grant Smith. But Smith shot a second-day 77, falling back into a three-way tie for second place at 146 with Ames senior Dustin Atkinson and Ankeny junior Andrew Huseman.

Dowling Catholic and Pleasant Valley tied for fourth with 633 team scores, followed by Johnston (636), West Des Moines Valley (637), Bettendorf and Cedar Rapids Xavier (645), Ankeny (648), Ames (654) and Muscatine (663).

Leading the trio of individual state qualifiers was Indianola senior Britton Vanderlinden, who tied for 12th with a 154.
