Thomas Steele, of Newton, made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated charge and a driving under suspension charge. The court appointed the public defender's office to represent him in these cases. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 26. Steele was released on his own recognizance. The court ordered that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today.
Magistrate Court
Lateisha Manning Spates, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a trespass charge. She pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75, due immediately.

On Saturday, Carrie Nicole Raske, 202 S. 9th St., reported the theft of an HP Compaq computer and 14 Hydrocodone pills from her residence. Estimated value of loss was $300.
On Friday, Shirley Jean Davis, of Clemons, reported hit and run damage to the rear bumper on a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer while parked at Hy-Vee, 802 S. Center St. Estimated value of damage was $800.

Accidents
On Sunday, a car driven by Tara Jo Landt, of Garwin, was northbound on South Center Street at the intersection with West Church Street when it collided with the rear of a minivan driven by Jian F. Zheng, 401 Rainbow Dr., which was stopped at the intersection sending it into the rear of a car driven by Miguel Alvarado, of San Jose, Calif., also stopped for the light. No injuries were reported. Landt was cited for following too close. Damage to the Landt car was estimated at $500 while the Zheng minivan and the Alvarado car both received an estimated $1,000 in damage.
On Friday, a car driven by Elva Sue Coon, 1105 Washington St., was northbound on Sixth Street at the intersection with Roberts Terrace when it attempted a left turn and collided with a vehicle driven by Cheryl G. Holmes, 912 W. Boone St., which was southbound on Sixth Street. No injuries were reported. Coon was cited for failure to yield upon left turn. Damage to the Coon car was estimated at $2,500 while the Holmes vehicle received an estimated $2,000 in damage.
On Thursday, a car driven by Nicholas Adam Danner, 518 Bromley St., was westbound on East Anson Street at South 18th Avenue when it collided with the rear of a minivan driven by Ronald Ray Carlson, 404 Thomas Dr., which was stopped at the stop sign. No injuries were reported. Danner was cited for following too close. Damage to the Danner car was estimated at $900 while the Carlson minivan received an estimated $1,500 in damage.
On Thursday, a car driven by Lawrence Franklin Smith, 211 N. 14th Ave., was southbound in the inside lane on South 12th Avenue at the intersection with East Olive Street when it attempted to turn right and collided with a minivan driven by Gustavo Adolfo Nava, 708 1/2 E. Main St., which was in the outside lane continuing through the intersection with Olive Street. Nava and passenger Kari Underhill, 3 E. Grant St., were transported to Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center with possible injuries. Smith was cited for turning from improper lane and Nava was cited for violation of restricted license. Damage to the Smith car was estimated at $3,500 while the Nava minivan received an estimated $3,000 in damage.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a smoke detector activation, no fire-unintentional at 1602 S. 2nd Ave., an extrication of victims on East Olive Street, a dispatched, cancelled en route to 402 N. 10th Ave., a special outside fire at 602 E. Anson St., and five medical assists with the EMS crew to: 802 S. Center St., 202 N. 2nd Ave., 108 N. 15th St., 405 E. Anson St., and 1309 E. Madison St.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to an unintentional transmission of alarm at 1301 Summit St., and four medical assists with the EMS crew to: 206 N. 7th St., 412 N. 8th St., 1001 Iowa Ave., and 1301 Summit St.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a smoke detector activation, no fire-unintentional at 106 College Dr., a gas leak at 3702 S. Center St., a fire in a structure other than a building at 3702 S. Center St., an outside rubbish fire at 704 Lee St., and eight medical assists with the EMS crew to: 915 W. Merle Hibbs Boulevard, 308 Thomas Dr., 206 Nicholas Dr., 102 W. South St., 327 S. 3rd Ave., 5 S. 6th Ave., 603 S. 7th St., and 1200 E. Olive St.

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to four medical assists with the EMS crew to: 410 1/2 W. Linn St., 909 1/2 E. Anson St., 511 E. Church St., and 407 W. Church St.
