Police still have few details about a car fatality on Highway 30 Thursday night.

The crash killed Tyrus Wanatee, 29, of Tama, and severely injured Keenan Bear, 23, of Tama. County Medical Examiner Dr. David Bethel pronounced Wanatee dead on scene. Paramedics airlifted Bear to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Capt. Mike Hanken, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said the sedan was traveling east on Highway 30 near 18th Avenue just before 10:30 p.m. when the driver lost control causing him to swerve into the grass and roll the car. The crash ejected the two men from the car.

Hanken said although the car is registered to someone with same last name as Wanatee, police are still unsure of who was driving at the time of the crash. The investigation continues, and many details of the crash, including whether the men were wearing their seatbelts, how they exited the car, how fast they were traveling and what caused the driver to swerve are still unknown.

The Marshalltown Fire Department, Area Paramedic Service and Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center as well as the City of Marshalltown Engineers Office and Street Department, Marshall County Sheriff's Office and Medical Examiner's Office and Iowa Department of Transportation assisted the MPD with the crash.

As of Friday night, Bear was in serious but stabile condition.
