VALPARAISO, Ind. - Mike Piatkowski threw for 327 yards and a score and added a rushing score during Drake's 35-21 win over winless Valparaiso on Saturday.
The Bulldogs also got 100-yard receiving game and two more scores from Jacob Schmudlach and took advantage of Valparaiso's 109 penalty yards to stay undefeated in the Pioneer Football League. Drake is 5-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Schmudlach had seven catches for 143 yards and a score and added a short rushing touchdown as well. Trey Morse rushed for 67 yards and a score, while Travis Merritt and John Huguin led the defense with 10 and nine tackles, respectively.
Piatkowski was 22-of-36 through the air and he had a rushing touchdown despite gaining negative yardage on the ground. He also completed passes to six different receivers on the day.
Drake scored 14 points in the opening quarter and added a consistent seven points in each of the final three frames to beat Valparaiso by double figures on the road. The Bulldogs out-gained their opponents 435-340 and had four more first downs. Neither team converted third downs at a high rate. Drake was just 4-of-14, while Valparaiso was worse at 4-for-17.
Valparaiso (0-6, 0-3) quarterback Ben Lehman completed just 11-of-26 and finished with 100 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Cody Gokan led the defense with 13 tackles.
Drake returns to conference play next Saturday at home against Marist. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
