WAVERLY - AGWSR senior Isaac Montes will be making his third state cross country appearance after finishing as runner-up at the Class 3A state-qualifier meet on Thursday at the Wartburg College course.

Montes clocked in at 16 minutes, 17 seconds, to lead the Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR boys, who placed eighth as a team. Montes trailed only 14th-ranked Kyle Hosting of No. 1-rated Decorah, who finished in 16:10.

Decorah was comfortably in first place with 29 points, ahead of fifth-ranked Charles City (85) and ninth-rated Vinton-Shellsburg (98). No. 8-ranked Dubuque Wahlert missed out on team qualification, totaling 112 points for fourth.

On the girls' side, IFA/AGWSR placed seventh led by Jessica Lippert in 29th position (16:53).

Top-ranked Decorah cruised to the team title with 34 points, followed by No. 6 Dubuque Wahlert (87) and both No. 15 Crestwood and Waverly-Shell Rock, which tied for third (110). W-SR's top-rated senior Anna Holdiman won the individual crown in a blistering 14:01. Holdiman has finished fifth, first and third in respective trips to the state meet.

Gilbert site postponed

AMES - The Class 2A state-qualifier meet hosted by Gilbert was one of seven sites postponed to Monday.

Area teams East Marshall, South Hardin and West Marshall were slated to run Thursday at the Iowa State Cross Country Course, but the meet was called off around noon by Gilbert athletic director Don Knock.

"I have had several discussions with athletic directors, coaches and many others. We feel that runner safety has to be priority one," Knock said in a statement. "With current weather conditions and the unfavorable forecast, we feel this is the best decision for the athletes.

"We would hate for the weather conditions to be a bigger factor in these races than the performances of the athletes."

Monday's meet will run with the same time schedule, starting with the girls' race at 4 p.m. and the boys to follow.
