It's hard to figure out candidate Ben Lange. He wants to be our Congressman, yet he doesn't want to put in the time necessary to do the job.
For months folks have been asking Lange whether he supports Paul Ryan's Republican budget which would basically turn Medicare into an underfunded voucher system. Each time Lange is asked he begs off, saying "I haven't read it yet." Recently he told the Waterloo Courier he still hasn't read the bill.
Contrast that with Bruce Braley. Several years ago we ran into Bruce at his son's high school tennis meet. Legislation proposing Obamacare had just been introduced. Braley was home supporting his son on the weekend, but was also using every spare minute to read page by page through hundreds of pages, marking passages with a highlighter, and writing comments and questions in the margins.
Braley truly reflects our values: he works hard, is balanced and fair, and relies on old-fashioned Iowa common sense.
Lange may be a fine young man. But when it comes to Ryan's Medicare proposal Lange is either being deceitful, or he's just plain lazy. Neither quality qualifies him to represent our community in Congress.
