ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Marshalltown Community College volleyball team picked up its third and fourth consecutive victories during the opening day of play at the Kishwaukee Tournament Friday at Rock Valley College.
MCC knocked off Black Hawk College of Moline in four sets, 25-14, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19, and then swept College of Lake County, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14.
The Tigers (12-19) also improved to 3-0 without the services of the country's leader in kills, as Mady Van Metre remains sidelined after suffering a concussion earlier this week during basketball practice.
In making up for the absence of Van Metre, MCC freshman Katelyn Yauslin continued her tear at the net with a team-high 22 kills in the victory over Black Hawk. Sam Oujiri added 14 kills and Breanna Cortez posted a season-high 11 kills in the Tigers' most balanced output yet.
Setter Tanya Literski totaled 49 assists to go with 10 digs and five service aces, while Ashley Salgado made 35 digs to lead the Tiger defense.
In the sweep of Lake County, Yauslin again led with 15 kills and Oujiri posted nine kills. Literski finished with 31 assists and four aces, while Salgado charted 16 digs.
"Those are two good wins, Katelyn really stepped it up and it was nice to have three people with more than 10 kills," said MCC head coach Chris Brees. "It's nice to have the offense spread around."
The Tigers return to tournament action this afternoon with a pair of matches. MCC faces McHenry County College at 2 p.m. and NJCAA Division III No. 5-ranked Harper College at 4 p.m.
