DES MOINES - The Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team suffered season-opening defeat on the road Thursday night, falling 71-62 to the Grand View junior varsity.
Mady Van Metre, an Iowa Western transfer with Marshalltown roots, led the MCC women with 16 points on the night. Sophomore center Latrice McMullen notched a double-double in the season opener with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Shantal Tobler added 10 points.
Shana Lee contributed nine points and five steals, and Ashley Salgado had seven points and five steals for the Tigers (0-1). Mackenzie Gott pulled down seven rebounds.
"We didn't get the effort we wanted on both sides of the ball," said MCC head coach Alison Lacey. "In the second half we came out really sluggish and Grand View came out ready to go. I hope it's a learning experience for us."
The Tigers take a week off now to ready themselves for the Hutchinson CC Classic on Nov. 9-10 in Hutchinson, Kan.
