Ames sophomore James defends state diving title

Maggie James became just the third diver to score over 500 points as the Ames sophomore won her second consecutive state diving title Friday night at the Iowa Girls State Diving Meet on Friday night at the Marshalltown Community Y.

James' score of 512.80 is the third highest total in state history, joining Fort Dodge's Mary Fischbach (583.45) and Iowa City High Veronica Rydze (534) as the only divers to score over 500 points.

West Des Moines Valley's Julie Dickinson was second with a 464.65 total while teammate Morgan Rafferty was third with a 443.15.

The third Tiger to dive at state, Ashlyn Clingman, rounded out her fourth straight state meet with a fifth-place finish.

West Des Moines Valley leads after one event in the State Swimming and Diving team race with 47 points while defending team champion Ames is second with 40. Jess Misra was sixth for the Little Cyclones and Mariah Griffith placed 10th.

The state swimming competition begins at noon today with the parade of teams.
