Sen. Steve Sodders, D-State Center, retained his seat against Republican challenger Jane Jech, of Marshalltown, Tuesday.
Sodders, who won his first State Senate race four years ago against Jarret Heil, took more than 53 percent of votes, winning Marshall County by nearly 2,000 votes to stave off Jech's vie for the District 36 seat.
"The key was my ability to work with both parties," Sodders said. "Folks in this district want someone who can work with both parties."
Moving into his second term, Sodders said he wants to focus on lowering tax rates for businesses to increase job numbers and improving education from early education to college.
"We really have to look at how to improve student achievement," he said.
Sodders said the biggest challenge of the race was quashing a constant onslaught of misinformation about his voting record.
Jech said while she was disappointed in her loss, she is grateful to all those who showed support. Jech would not comment as to whether she would seek another office having been defeated previously in the State House.
Sodders said he would continue to do what is best for the citizens of the area.
