Velda was born in rural Conrad to Fred Truman and Clara Mabel (Crecelius) Holman on Sept. 18, 1924. She was raised in the rural Conrad area, graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1942. Velda was united in marriage to Robert A. Dunn on Jan. 1, 1944, at the United Methodist Church in Albion. He died March 31, 1989. Velda farmed along with her husband in the Marshall County area. Besides being busy farming, she was very active in club work, the New Century club, Federated Women's club, and various card clubs. She was a volunteer at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center gift shop and most recently she was employed as a greeter at Walmart and Chalet Dress shop in Marshalltown. She liked to travel, read, spend time with her family and be with people. She also found great pleasure in nice clothes, jewelry and her high heels and her hair was never out of place even when working out in the fields.

Velda will be missed by a daughter, Janet Smitherman, of Union; two grandchildren: Jeff (Patty) Smitherman, of Union, and Jim (Lisa) Smitherman, of Austin, Texas; five great grandchildren; a brother, Duane Holman, of Union, and two nieces.
