Iowa Veterans Home commandant David Worley gestures while making remarks at IVH celebrating the USMC’s 237th birthday in Malloy Hall Saturday morning. Beaman native Maj. Steve Svendson, USMC (Ret.) of Des Moines gave the keynote address, which highlighted historic USMC achievements from the colonial-era to the War on Terror. IVH resident June Gunderson, 95, formerly of Liscomb, was honored as the oldest Marine and IVH resident Phillip Huntley, of Marshalltown, the youngest, in a special ceremony following Svendson’s remarks. A large crowd made of Marines, residents and public were present to pay tribute to the distinguished fighting unit.
