Names of nine Wellsburg area veterans killed in action are displayed on an obelisk while an American soldier knelling before a cross marking a fallen comrade are shown recently at the Wellsburg Veterans Memorial in the town park. To the far left are names of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard members while rear center depicts an American flag and slogan “All Gave Some, Some Gave All.” Also in place are granite blocks listing names of servicemen and women who served in the Army, Air Force and Marines. As of June 10, 2012 — the date of its dedication — 527 names had been inscribed. To be included, a veteran must have lived in Wellsburg, attended Wellsburg or AGSWR schools, or affiliated with a local veterans organization. The 50-foot by 50-foot memorial is lit 24/7. Wellsburg area citizens donated $200,000 to build the granite and stone structure. An additional $25,000 was donated to install new sidewalks and handicap accessible restrooms in the park.
