A Marshalltown woman charged in the death of her granddaughter will plead guilty Nov. 20.
Ruth Sharer, 40, faces two counts of child endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors, after she left her 18-month-old granddaughter and the toddler's 3-year-old brother unattended at her home on Summit Street where she lived with her daughter in 2011.
Because of the neglect, the toddler, Destiny Hernandez, died. The State Medical Examiner was unable to determine the manner in which the child died and listed the cause of death as "unknown."
In August, the court sentenced Sharer's daughter, Kristen Hernandez, 24, to five years of probation in lieu of jail time after she pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent, a Class C felony, and child endangerment without injury. Hernandez is the children's mother.
Ben Stansberry, the assistant Marshall County attorney prosecuting the case, was unavailable to comment whether Sharer will plead guilty to the original charge or to a reduced charge.
