The name of the man who was hit by a train early Wednesday morning has been released by the Marshalltown Police Department.

Edwin Lugo, 38, of Marshalltown was severely injured in the accident and was in serious condition at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines as of Thursday afternoon. The police reported he was in intensive care with major multiple injuries.

The incident occurred at 4:53 a.m. Wednesday morning underneath the Center Street viaduct, where Lugo was found trapped underneath the train engine.

Capt. Mike Hanken said the MPD is planning on sending an investigator to the hospital when Lugo's condition allows, but he had no other new information to release Thursday.

"We won't know (additional information) until we have an opportunity to interview him," Hanken said.

Lugo has had several charges from law enforcement in Marshalltown this year. He was recently accused of a probation violation with a hearing scheduled for Nov. 30. Lugo was put on probation as a result of previous convictions of domestic abuse assault, filing a false report and two cases of child endangerment.

The MPD and the Union Pacific Railroad Police are continuing their investigation.
