GIRLS BASKETBALL: West Marshall girls march to 2-0 start

IOWA FALLS - Whitney Benson matched her career-high with 14 points and Rachel Freland threw in 13 points as the West Marshall girls' basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 50-33 win Tuesday night over Iowa Falls-Alden.

The Trojans broke open a close game by outscoring their hosts 14-6 in the third quarter, and then West Marshall went on to end the game on a 15-2 run.

Jenn Davis chipped in six points and a team-leading 15 rebounds, while McKenna Hotopp had seven points, five rebounds and two steals. Benson had four steals and three assists, while Freland chipped in four assists and a pair of steals.

Sophia Wibholm led the host Cadets (1-1) with nine points.

West Marshall will play its home opener next Tuesday, entertaining Dike-New Hartford in a girls' doubleheader.

South Hardin 61, GMG 41

GARWIN - The South Hardin girls got their first win of the season, breaking free from GMG for a 61-41 victory.

Kayla Prosser matched her career-high with 24 points to lead South Hardin (1-2). Sarah Boomgarden pitched in with 15 points, Sabrina DeHerrera had 11 and Claire Damon seven.

Olivia Barritt had team-highs of 15 points (a career high), nine rebounds and four steals to pace GMG (0-2). Cheyenne Wurr also netted a new personal best of 12 points, while Caitlin Appelgate, Lexie Dubberke and Sara Hinson added four points apiece. Mikaella Koster led the Wolverines with three assists.

GMG opens Iowa Star Conference play next Tuesday at Don Bosco, playing a girls doubleheader with varsity set to tip off at 8 p.m. South Hardin hosts Gladbrook-Reinbeck in their NICL West Division opener Nov. 30 in Eldora.

Hudson 62,

East Marshall 44

HUDSON - Hudson sophomore Casey Miles matched her career high with 21 points and Amanda Courtney had a career-best 15 as the Pirates turned back East Marshall, 62-44, in Tuesday's cross-NICL contest.

Hudson (1-0) led 33-16 at the half but saw the Mustangs cut the deficit to 10 after outscoring the Pirates 22-15 in the third.

All of East Marshall's scoring came from four sophomores, each of which achieved new career highs. Taylor Fricke led the way with 18 points, Ashley Allen had 12, Mariah Fritz seven and Meriel Leavy six.

The Mustangs play their home opener on Monday, facing off against Jesup.

Dike-New Hartford 43, BCLUW 22

DIKE - Brooke Morgan matched her career high with 14 points and led her team with eight rebounds as Dike-New Hartford won its season opener, 43-22, over cross-NICL foe BCLUW.

Morgan Samec added seven points while Alivia Zubrod and Lizzy Blough both had six for the Wolverines, who outscored their guests 20-0 in the first quarter.

BCLUW (1-1) plays host to AGWSR in both teams' NICL West Division opener Nov. 30 in Conrad.
