A contract agreement was reached between the Marshalltown Community School District and architect TSP, of Marshalltown, for three upcoming school building projects.

The agreement, approved by the school board Monday, will have TSP do design work for the Miller Middle School 1957 building renovation, the Marshalltown High School high voltage electric upgrade and the Support Services building renovation.

All of these projects are expected to be bid in the spring and are slated to be summer construction projects in 2013. The Support Services project, which includes renovating a portion of the old Anson Middle School into administrative offices, is expected to last until December 2013. The other two projects are expected to be completed during the summer, said Superintendent Marvin Wade.

In other action, the board approved 12 voluntary early retirement incentive applications from staff members who have a total of 252 years of experience. Among those retiring at the end of the 2012-13 school year are Anson Elementary School Principal Bea Niblock, 34-year teacher Julie Miller and 33-year teacher Cheryl LaVille. Other retirements include Jane Boehler, Julie Bousum, Nancy Brant Ahn, Beth Campbell, Lacinda Gillen, Steven Hanson, Marna Hunnicutt, Peggy Kelly and Jan McGinnis.

When it was announced these retirements were being accepted, School Board President Sherm Welker requested a round of applause from the board for the retiring staff.

It is expected there will be more staff early retirements as the incentive of insurance benefits beyond retirement is halted for 2014. Staff have until Jan. 4 to decide if they want to retire at the end of the 2012-13 school year with the incentive.

The next regular meeting of the school board will be at 5 p.m Dec. 17 at district offices.
