Indians too much for MHS boys’ swim squad

INDIANOLA - The Simpson College pool was a little longer, and the Indianola boys' swimming team was a little deeper.

The Marshalltown boys' swim squad came up short in the final scoring despite winning six of 11 events during Tuesday's CIML dual meet. The Bobcats won both freestyle relays but couldn't match the Indians' depth, falling 93-77.

Sam Carter captured two individual golds for Marshalltown (0-2), winning the 200- and 400-meter freestyle events. Paul Landherr claimed the top spot in the 50 freestyle and John Mahlstede won the 100 backstroke, while both free relays went to the Bobcats as well.

The 200 freestyle relay consisted of Blair Van Staalduine, Dan Lothe, Landherr and Carter touched up just 15-hundredths of a second in front of Indianola's runner-up contingent, while the 400 free relay foursome of Carter Barnard, Raymond Dulaney, Mahlstede and Carter had more than 5 seconds on the Indians' second-place team.

The 'Cats charted 20 season-best times and eight lifetime bests as well, but the longer meter pool inside Cowles Fieldhouse and an Indianola squad with too much depth kept the dual victory out of the Bobcats' reach.

Indianola won the 200 medley relay and had the third-place team in all three relays. Jonah Hatten had two event wins for the Indians, taking the 200 individual medley and the breaststroke.
