NEWTON - Blake Judkins scored 15 of his career-high 18 points in the first half to keep the Marshalltown boys' basketball team in the lead, and the Bobcats used a full-court defense to expand it in the second half for a 59-40 triumph over Newton in non-conference play Monday.

Blake Gimbel scored a season-high 21 points, highlighting Marshalltown's dominant second half with a 3-pointer and a breakaway dunk during the team's runaway third quarter. The Bobcats (2-3) used a 12-2 surge to start the second half and outscored the host Cardinals 35-20 in the final two periods.

"We came out in the third quarter and used some pressure defense and got some steals, got some turnovers and Blake got a dunk and hit a 3-pointer for us," said MHS head coach Scott Smith. "I think that run was the difference in the game, the guys really got after it.

"It's the first time I think we've really used any full-court pressure but it worked out for us, and then the kids did a nice job managing the clock down the stretch."

The Bobcats made eight 3-pointers on the night, including three for Judkins, two apiece for Gimbel and Hunter Hillygus, and another for Austin Kluver in his first varsity start at point guard. De'Quan McDowell added seven points to go with a team-high seven rebounds, and Marshalltown won its second consecutive game.

Daquan Allen led Newton (2-2) with 14 points but was the team's only double-digit scorer. Jesse Bates added seven points, while Tyler Wood and Ryan Thompson had six points apiece.
