It's great to see the 13th Street project progressing so nicely. There is a lot of history there. If one looks up the street from the south, there is even more history beyond those iron gates and the stone guardhouse. Don't let the closed gates fool you into thinking you're not welcome there. With a "public" ceremony, the Iowa Veterans Home marked its 125th anniversary on Dec. 1. How great would it have been for our United States Veterans to look over and see a room packed with Marshalltown people, rather than rows of empty chairs.
The history at IVH is not just in its buildings and grounds, but in the lives of its people. Yes, they want to be remembered when they're gone, but they need to be honored while they're still with us.
Please take an interest in the Iowa Veterans Home. Watch for public events and show our heroes that they are still a vital part of this community.
