CEDAR FALLS - With a distinct size advantage inside, the Iowa State Cyclones were able to build a big lead on instate rival Northern Iowa and then turned away a rally late to beat the Panthers, 67-59, at the McLeod Center.

The Cyclones scored 30 points inside the paint, won the rebounding battle and also buried 11-of-12 free throws in the win.

"We had an advantage inside so we wanted to go in there whenever we could," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said.

Northern Iowa was missing starting post Amber Kirschbaum and also was forced to play without key reserve Sharnae Lamar.

Iowa State was led by Hallie Christofferson's 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Chelsea Poppens and Anna Prins both added 14 points for the Cyclones, who are now 7-1 on the season. Poppens also grabbed 10 rebounds, and point guard Nikki Moody turned in 11 points and seven assists in the win.

"It was a typical instate game," Fennelly said. "We had the chance to put them away in the first half when we got up 16 but then turned it over five straight times. UNI isn't going to quit, but everytime things got close we were able to come up with a big shot."
