PARK RIDGE, Ill. - After burying four 3-pointers and scoring 23 points against Northern Iowa on Saturday, Iowa point guard Mike Gesell was named Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement by the league Monday.
It is the first honor for Gesell, who helped the Hawkeyes to an 80-73 win over the Panthers in the first-ever Big Four Classic at Wells Fargo Arena.
Gesell is the first Hawkeye to win this honor since Aaron White claimed the accolade this past Februray.
Gesell posted personal-bests in points (23), 3-pointers made (4), free throws made (7) and free throws attempted (9) during the Iowa win.
He shot 67 percent from the floor and also added two rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes of action.
The South Sioux City, Neb., native played a key role in helping Iowa win its fourth straight game.
The Hawkeyes are now 9-2 and off to their best start since 2008-09.
Iowa returns to action Wednesday when it hosts South Carolina State.
Tip-off is set for 8:06 p.m. on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
