Blizzard safety tips

December 20, 2012
Times-Republican

With a blizzard upon us, the Marshalltown Police Department and Marshall County Sheriff's Office want to remind people of a few tips to keep safe during the storm:

Don't leave the house unless necessary.

If you do leave, take a winter weather kit. The kit should include blankets, water, food, a flashlight with batteries, a fully-charged cell phone, a snow brush and anything else you think you might need should you get stranded

Think ahead. Plan where you are going, get all groceries and such items you will need for the next couple days in one trip to avoid unnecessary travel.

Drive within your abilities. Be cautious of other drivers whose vehicles likely have different capabilities.

Let someone know where you are going, which route you will be taken and give them a number to call in case you don't arrive on time.

If you leave the road, turn on your hazards and get as far over to the side as you can for others' safety.
